Letter from the newsroom

This is the first issue of Revista Puressência laid out as a paper magazine: the 25 stories from the portal's nine sections, each with a source for every fact, on pages you can turn. This English edition carries each story's English title and summary; the full articles are published in Portuguese.

The cover story follows three stops, a studio in Düsseldorf, an eighth floor in New York and a late-night radio show in Detroit, to show how electronic music became dance music between 1974 and 1988. Two more History essays take other roads: the tapes that travelled hand to hand in Memphis, and Los Angeles G-funk.

The agenda runs from 15 October, with the 50th Mostra, to 13 December, in Belém. At the end, apart from the journalism and labelled “From the house”, is the Studio: Império returns in a Cruaseca version on 9 October.

The artwork is the house's own and is credited “Image: Puressência”. Spotted an error? Write to contatopuressencia@gmail.com.

Editorial principles

How this magazine is made

Corrections: contatopuressencia@gmail.com. They are noted under the story, with the date.

  • A source for every fact.Every story ends with its sources, linked and dated. No source, no fact.
  • Genre on display.Every story shows its genre above the headline.
  • Quotes. At most one short quote per story, attributed and sourced. Never song lyrics.
  • Images. No third-party photos, posters, album covers, logos or screenshots. Stories use our own typographic covers. The house’s concept artwork is credited “Image: Puressência” and never depicts real people or brands.
  • Artificial intelligence.Texts are written with AI assistance. Before publication every fact is checked at the source; the note under each story says so.
  • From the house.Anything about Puressência Produtora itself or its artists is labelled “From the house” and lives in the Studio, outside the journalism sections. The cover story is always journalism.
  • No advertising, no prices. No ads, sponsorship or pop-ups, and no audience rankings: the magazine does not track readers. No ticket, product or service prices.

At the Latin Grammys, Portuguese-language rap now competes as albums

For 2026, the Latin Recording Academy turned its Portuguese-language urban performance category into an album award, and all five nominees announced on September 16 are Brazilian. The same rulebook renames the electronic category, states that production tools alone do not qualify a track for it, and keeps works with no human authorship out of every category. The ceremony is set for November 12 in Las Vegas.

Rodrigo Ogi steps away from the mic as beatmaker Loopcínio Rodrigo

Brazilian rapper Rodrigo Ogi released “Loopcínio Rodrigo, Vol. 1” on September 16, his first album credited entirely as a beatmaker, with 16 MCs from six Brazilian states rapping over his sample-based production. In an interview with Billboard Brasil he describes months of near-daily beatmaking, a habit that goes back to Fruity Loops in the early 2000s, and the cost of a sample that was exposed and claimed by a label. A second volume is due this year and a solo album produced by his new alias is planned for 2027.

Memphis on tape: the rap that travelled hand to hand

In late 1980s and 1990s Memphis, DJs such as DJ Spanish Fly and DJ Squeeky recorded at home, sold cassettes at club windows and saw bootleg copies carry them to other Southern cities. This essay follows the compact cassette from a Philips lab to Memphis car stereos, and shows how tape hiss, dubbing and hand-to-hand circulation became part of a sound that later reached Atlanta, the Oscars and record collectors abroad.

G-funk: when Los Angeles slowed funk down

Between The Chronic in December 1992 and Regulate in 1994, a small circle of Los Angeles and Long Beach producers and rappers turned funk and soul records from the 1970s and early 1980s into the defining West Coast sound of the decade. This essay looks at the method behind G-funk (slower grooves, replayed P-Funk lines, a high synth lead) and at the violence that runs through its story.

The machine helps. People sign the music

At their June peak, fully AI-generated tracks made up more than half of daily uploads on one streaming service, while US authorities, the European Union and Brazilian lawmakers set rules on authorship, labeling and training. Puressência's editorial board argues for three rules: credit people by name, disclose where AI was used, and license what goes into training.

Gonzaguinha, in his own voice

Susanna Lira's documentary on Brazilian songwriter Gonzaguinha (1945–1991) won the Kikito for best documentary feature at the 54th Gramado Film Festival and opened in Brazilian cinemas on 3 September 2026. The film is built almost entirely from archive footage, TV appearances and the artist's own interviews, with his songs as the thread through dictatorship and redemocratization. Actor André Dale plays him in scenes drawn from what he told the alternative weekly O Pasquim.

Suno launches v6 and is back in court nine days later

On September 9, Suno released v6, a family of three music-generation models that the company says it developed with industry partners, among them Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe. On September 18, Universal Music and Sony Music went back to federal court in Boston with a second lawsuit covering 60,202 recordings. Their argument is that v6 carries over the earlier infringement, since, according to the complaint, it learned from how users interacted with older models that had been trained on unlicensed music. The case comes after a German court in Munich ruled mostly against Suno in July, and while Brazil's AI bill, with its copyright chapter still unresolved, is expected to reach a vote only after the October elections.

Apple Music Hall: the stage that comes out mixed in Spatial Audio

Apple has opened Apple Music Hall, its first live venue, inside Battersea Power Station in London. The room holds 600 people and is ringed by 48 loudspeakers for immersive sound; behind the stage sit two studios for recording and mixing, plus a control room wired for at least 16 cameras. According to Apple, one night on that stage can leave an artist with three things ready to use: a Spatial Audio master, a mix prepared for broadcast and video shot from many angles. Shows are streamed live around the world through Apple Music. Elton John opened the venue on September 28, and the official site lists shows through December 2.

A Vinyl Bar in Shibuya gets a pre-seed round to release apps like singles

A Vinyl Bar in Shibuya, started in 2024 by Máuhan M. Zonoozy, who used to run innovation at Spotify, has secured a pre-seed round, as TechCrunch reported on September 14. Calling itself a music software label, the company puts out small web and iOS apps, among them the stem player Stacks and the remix app bop, meant for playing with songs instead of just streaming them. Zonoozy told TechCrunch he is not convinced that AI song generation, on its own, is where music is headed; after the site tried the apps in August, the company introduced a text-prompt tool for making sounds.

Modulate, maker of an AI music detector, closes a new round

Modulate, an audio AI company based in Boston, said on September 28 that it had closed a new funding round. Future Ventures led it, and earlier investors Hyperplane and Lakestar also took part. The announcement is about voice AI broadly, yet since June Modulate has sold an API that checks music for AI generation, rating vocals and instrumentals separately in four-second windows, pitched to streaming platforms, distributors and rights organizations. The deal arrives as Deezer says fully AI-generated tracks made up more than half of its new daily uploads on peak days in June.

Rock in Rio adds the audience's journey to its carbon account

For its September 2026 edition, Rock in Rio extended carbon compensation beyond the festival grounds to include how the audience, suppliers and staff travelled to and from the site, estimating about 50,000 tonnes of CO2e from 2024 data. A December 2025 MIT Climate Machine study of more than 80,000 events found that fan travel accounts for 62% of live music emissions in the US and 77% in the UK. The festival planned to survey attendees about their journeys during its seven days, but neither its official wrap-up of September 15 nor its energy partner's later statements included a final emissions figure.

How much carbon fits in an LP: the vinyl industry redoes the math

The record industry's first carbon report, in 2024, put an average vinyl record at about 1.15 kg CO2e and said bio-attributed PVC could cut that by around 44%; in May 2025 the Vinyl Alliance said that saving had been overstated. Product-level footprints published by the Music Climate Pact in June 2026 put a typical 140g PVC record at 0.93 kg CO2e, against 0.54 kg for injection-moulded PET and 0.38 kg with recycled PET. Avoiding air freight, choosing 140g black records and simple packaging remain the most reliable levers.
